the past month and the upcoming one
i have become one of those weird IM conversation enders. think kotler. i just stop talking. i dont purposely not respond. i just kind of forget to, until much later and i realize that the person has signed off, or is idle or it is just so much past the moment that it would be weird to respond.
this is one thing i have learned about myself.
another is that helping 40-odd boys with their science projects turns me into a nagging haggard wretch. i harp, complain, threaten and generally become nasty. the boys in general think this is delightful and repeat and mock everything i say.
but to back up a little:
where i work (i am avoiding naming said location because of my afore mentioned fear that one of the boys is going to google me and read all three posts that i have. mortal fear. honest. death will come. it will be ushered in by students reading this blog) throws an annual science fair. and because we can't expect the kids to do their projects at home (for a variety of reasons, one being that we can't expect them to be at school for 14 hours in the day and conduct experiments at home, two being that we can't expect them to be dirt poor and afford materials to conduct experiments and there are of course many more). so instead the science department, for over a month, just does science fair prep and experiments. i ask you to remember your own science projects. how much were your parents involved? now pretend that you are your parent with 40 boys. i was v. v. busy. and as a result, hated everything to do with science. physics. despised it. john f. took a science class in high school. couldn't be in his presence. someone wanted to boil water. not with me in the room. science fairs and me. we hated each other.
but now it is finished. it went marvelously. what a good teacher i am! the kids shined. they had beautiful poster boards. everyone said it was the best at the school. they understood why earthworms helped lima beans, why water systems should be uniform, if temperature affected magnetism and what really was the best way to make ice cream. they and i are geniuses and it ended way too late for my sanity.
now on to life decisions. i am going to MSU this weekend (i got in to the material science program and they are paying for me to go home for the weekend as long as i visit them on friday!) and case western next weekend (anyone in cleveland friday night, i have free time). by the 15th i need to decide when to go, and i have set a personal goal to know what i am going to do next year by then as well. do i stay here and defer. do i go to grad school next year. brad suggested if i am not in love with either place to just stay here and re-apply to schools (this time actually taking the proper tests and getting my applications in on-time) and look at schools all over instead of just in the midwest. which opens a whole new set of options. i hate life decisions. where are thursdays at the feve when you need them most?
